SWM -- Coverage

This is a professional assessment of your script based on studio guidelines and presented in standard coverage format -- log line, brief synopsis, brief comments, detailed synopsis and detailed comments, as well as PASS/CONSIDER/RECOMMEND qualifiers for both the material and writer(s).

Comments will outline the strengths and weaknesses of the piece, while the synopsis provides a barometer as to the clarity of your writing. Is your story tracking clearly? Does the plot make sense to industry eyes?

Coverage is a useful diagnostic tool to gauge the current level of your writing. One common misstep that first-time writers make is to submit material before it's up to industry standards. Particularly today, when companies track and cross-reference submissions using computer databases, the onus of an early "bad read" can shadow a writer from script to script, hampering efforts to be taken seriously and relegating future work to the bottom of the slush pile.

The key concept boils down to the old maxim: You never get a second chance to make a first impression.

On the other end of the spectrum, good coverage can be another arrow in your quiver, acting as a calling card, an easily-digestible introduction to your script and additional ammunition when soliciting representation, a key early step in any writing career.
